Whatever “knife fight music” means, Hanni El Khatib self-proclaims it and can play it. This Ray Ban-clad musician with slicked-back hair and tattooed arms is basically the new-age greaser dreamboat that 2012 has been waiting for.

The LA Times calls his September 2011 debut album, Will The Guns Come Out, “malt shop music for those who like their confections spiked with bourbon.” His songs, which include Local favorites “Dead Wrong” and “Fuck It, You Win” are filled with 1950s blues and rock n’ roll nostalgia that the new underground rappers and DJs could never emulate. And he’s accomplished all of this with cultural tastefulness and recognition: he’s been featured in French Vogue, opened for Florence + the Machine and is currently touring Europe.

As a first generation American with half Filipino and half Palestinian origins, El Khatib grew up in the wake of the San Francisco skate-punk era. Although his sound is vintage rock and grunge-y, El Khatib has worked as an art director, designer and for a clothing label/skating company called HUF. He just used to make music for fun until his songs got into the right peoples’ hands.

Although he doesn’t have an ex-wife who played in his band a la White Stripes, or play at Coachella two years in a row whilst singing for car commercials like the Black Keys, El Khatib’s sound is bluesy garage rock that makes you want to fight with knives.

Designer Labels: Labrador

“I put out the music I love and never think about whether an artist is going to sell or not before I sign them,” explains Johan Angergård - the mind behind Sweden’s Labrador Records, a label that’s shaped alternative indie and electro pop for over a decade and now suddenly finds itself as part of a booming Scandinavian scene flourishing along with it. As well as head of the Nordic-based venture, Johan has also played a major part in many of the bands he’s put out - making the label more of a community than a commercial outlet.

Angergård was raised in the small town of Åhus in the south of the country and this is where Labrador was first founded, back in 1997. In the early days most of the bands Angergård approached were more or less from his own neighbourhood, some even starring him as a member, with the initial plan of the label as being to release compilation 7" singles only. Soon Johan’s - as well as Labrador’s - ambitions grew and the label’s ethos became to “release the best Swedish pop bands” around.

“When I was 17 or so, there weren't too many good bands from Sweden, just enough to make a compilation album with 2-3 songs by each band I loved from my village,” Angergård tells DIY - casting his mind back to the beginning of Labrador’s timeline. It was clear that Labrador was never going to be something restricted to Sweden, despite it’s localised focused, as Angergård continues: “We thought of Labrador as an international label from the start. All my favourite labels had small followings all over the world and that's how I thought it would be with us too.”

The first release was indeed, like Johan says, a mix of local beloved bands, putting out a 4 -track compilation single with Diganoise, Martin Thulin, Acid House Kings and Céleste. But there was something bubbling under the crisp Nordic soil that Labrador grabbed at with both hands. “We noticed a prevalence of home recording artists making their way with the use of internet in various ways,” Jonah says. “When the bands had all the time in the world to produce music, their sounds became more experimental. Perhaps ‘unique’ is a better word because it wasn't experimental in a way difficult way.”

“The Radio Dept, The Legends and Suburban Kids with Biblical Names marked a new area in the labels history. These bands lead the label to the Swedish sales charts for the first time.”

With a reputation that’s grown over the last fifteen years, the label now see themselves in a rather favourable position - as part of a wider Scandanavian scene that has bloomed into life around - and perhaps particular because of - them. 2011 in particular was a prominent year for Swedish bands outside of the Labrador roster, with Korallreven, First Aid Kit and Niki The Dove wooing everyone from Radio 1 to Pitchfork. Elsewhere up in the Northern hemisphere, we’ve seen Norweigan acts introduced to Western audiences - such as Team Me and Ane Brun - as well as Soley from Iceland, Mirel Wagner of Finland and Denmark’s Iceage, Oh Land and When Saints Go Machine all flourishing.

“It's funny because ever since we started Labrador in 1997 we keep hearing questions about how good Scandinavian music is doing. But I guess now it’s more true than ever before,” Johan opinions. “I think home recording had an unusually strong impact on the Swedish music scene. These musicians didn't take inspiration from any other countries.”

Even though Labrador stands as a home-grown export outlet, the rules are there to be bent however as Jonah tells us: “As our motto is 'bringing the best Swedish pop to the world', bands do really need to be Swedish. But we've never really thought of what we actually mean by being Swedish. For example, if you're originally from the UK and then move here, can you be signed to Labrador? Maybe.”

So what do the label look for in new bands? It must be tiring, ploughing through hundreds upon hundreds of emails from aspiring bands, right? Well, not for this label boss. “I rarely read what the bands write in their email pitches to be honest. I just listen to the songs,” Angergård admits. “But I have to be surprised and moved. The music has to create a world of it's own and listening to it should absorb me into that world.”

“If it's a band that surprises me and make music I want to listen to over and over again I sign them even if they sound like something no one will ever buy.”

Speaking of commercial success, have there been any uncharacteristic moments where Labrador have missed out on the next big thing, an act that has gone on to do extraordinarily well in their homeland and further afield? “Well, I never tried to sign Lykke Li when I originally heard her demos but absolutely love the way she sounds today,” Johan recalls. “But it wasn't exactly like she was knocking on the Labrador door saying “Please sign me!” - her publisher just played me a few songs, sent a link or something like that.”

So what does the future hold for Labrador? Angergård ends our discussion by looking towards the even brighter future that the label has laying ahead for both them and us as listenerds. “Amanda Mair is the most recent act I’ve been excited about. Her album comes out soon too.”

With record labels falling foul to financial crises all around, it’s hard to envision an independent label as invincible in this day and age. But conversely it’s the tight-knit, deeply-ingrained nature of this Swedish label, as well as it’s impeccable eye for forward-thinking talent, that will see it survive for hopefully another fifteen years and then some.

“It's great to see how most people who love one band on the label soon discover the other bands and love them too.” Long will live Labrador, we’re assured of it.

Since Billy Butlins first introduced the redcoats uniform back in 1936, the distinctive red blazers have become one of the most enduring sights at Butlins holiday camps.

But just as the famous resorts must change with the times to continue attracting holidaymakers, so the uniforms worn by the staff must evolve too.

Today Butlins unveiled their newest Redcoats uniform, designed by up and coming British designer Hannah Clayton.

The young designer, whose designs have been worn by Lady Gaga, was billed as one to watch by Italian Vogue - but has put her couture ambitions on hold for long enough to revamp the Butlins uniform.

Grimsby-born Hannah, 25, said she was honoured to redesign the iconic blazer - and spent time with the Redcoats to ascertain exactly what they wanted from their uniform. As a result, she decided to include a Redcoats dress for the first time.

'Having spent time with the Redcoats in Bognor Regis I was able to fully
understand the importance of their role, the physical demands of the
job, and how essential it is that they look and feel the part,' she said.

Passionate: 'Working on this project has allowed me to design clothing that is aesthetically appealing whilst still functional,' said Clayton

'I’m

'The most significant changes can be seen in the casual outfits, which
adopt a fresh sporty style with a baseball jacket, long sleeved T-shirts, trousers and red baseball boots.

time a dress has been introduced.'

The Redcoats have previously been redesigned by Zandra Rhodes and Jeff Banks, but this time Butlins said they specifically wanted a young designer who they hoped could 'relate to the Redcoats.'

And Hannah is certainly well placed to do that. Having graduated from the University of Westminster just two years ago, she has already launched her own fashion label and sold one of her own platform shoe designs (of the likes she wears in the photographs) that was bought by Lady Gaga.

The Duchess of Cambridge has turned heads in several of her designs.

But for many, Jenny Packham's pricey eponymous label - which starts at £85 for a Swarovski embellished thong - has remained a little off budget.

Now the British designer, whose flagship store is situated in London's Mayfair, is launching a cut-price collection for Debenhams.

'No.1 Jenny Packham’ , a glamorous new
women’s, accessories and children’s range designed exclusively for the
department store, will retail from £85 to £160 and launches in April

It captures Jenny’s signature style in a collection of 19 dresses, available in soft metallics, floral or intricate graphic prints and bold block colours.

They feature Packham's signature wrapping, pleating and gentle draping of fabrics, in a variety of styles from floor-sweeping maxis to organza prom dresses.

A range of accessories including bags, jewellery, shoes and occasion headwear will complement the dresses, with prices ranging from £18 to £100.

The collaboration also sees Jenny’s
first foray into childrenswear design, as the women’s collection is
complemented by a capsule bridesmaid offer.

The flower girl and bridesmaid dresses take Jenny’s signature elegance
and attention to detail, to create charming pieces for children,
featuring georgette, lace and intricate embellishment to add sparkle.
Prices start from £48.

In store ‘No. 1 Jenny Packham’ will cover approximately 8,300sq ft of
space across 72 stores for launch, and will expand to a further 56 later
in the year.

The first eight dresses in the women’s collection will be available in
stores and online in April, with the remainder rolling out through the
summer.

The designer said: 'As a young girl I
was regularly abandoned in Debenhams Southampton whilst my parents
disappeared to search for the latest Teasmade or some other ‘must have’
electrical appliance. During this time I lost myself in the rails of
70’s polyester and dreamt of a life in fashion.

'Therefore it is only natural that I have chosen Debenhams to launch my first High Street collection.

shoppers.

Stars such as Rihanna, Keira Knightley, Beyonce and Cameron Diaz have been spotted in gowns from Jenny Packham and last year the Duchess of Cambridge opted the designer on three separate occasions.

The most memorable being a £3,800 shimmering gown worn to the ARK charity gala last year.

The 30-year-old was also seen in two dresses on the Royal tour to Canada and the U.S.

She chose a yellow sundress for her arrival in Calgary in, and a hand-painted floral frock to attend the polo in Santa Barbara, California, two days later.

Jenny Packham launched her first collection at the London Designer Show in 1988, the label now has stores in London and Paris, and is stocked globally.

Those dresses seem designed for a particular body shape, and it doesn't look like it'd be suitable for the bodies of most British people (statistical fact). She should try to get her brand to other countries -- Japan, Korea, parts of South America -- where there are more people of those slim shapes.
