Eyewear emperor Ray-Ban is going gay with a campaign showing taste-makers, rebels and ne’er-do-wells sporting the signature shades and frames throughout the past 75 years of business in celebration of their anniversary.

Naturally, we’re quite fond of the 1940′s dapper gents holding hands and not giving a damn about the disdainful looks they’re receiving from crowds on the city street. You can read all about Taylor Mead, the man whose life inspired the shot, HERE.

But the soldier volunteering, the flower power couple smooching during the riot and the soaking wet ladies in shades all give good face as well!

You can check out all of the shots over at the Never Hide Ray-Ban campaign. Which is your favorite?

If something is popular and a lot of people go to a specific place you are certain that that place is going to be the target of those trying to do wrong. A busy shopping street will attract a lot of pick pockets. A busy website will attract hackers and social media sites like Twitter and Facebook will attract spam and hoaxes.

Usually most marketers know when something is a hoax or not and don’t respond to it. Last Friday however we witnessed a hoax attempt on Facebook go viral. The interesting part there was that most of the people who ‘fell for it’ were marketers. A funny side effect here was that they ‘fell’ for what is part of their own strategy: human psychology.

The Ray-Ban Hoax

So what hoax are we talking about here? Last Friday Facebook was flooded with people liking and sharing a post saying “Get a Free Pair of Ray-Bans! (limited time only)!”

When clicking on the link you were taken to a pages which would suggest there were over 900 pairs left of free Ray Bans. All you had to do is share and like the page.

It looked as if you had the chance to actually win the free pair of glasses, but in fact you didn’t. You were taken to a page where they collected personal information about you. On top of that the user is asked to grant permission to an app that is allowed to post on behalf of the user, in other words: spamming your friends.

The number of ‘available’ glasses would not drop one by one, but in groups, because a piece of script would take a random number off and add another random number. It is a classic ‘survey scam’.

And you would never see any free Ray-Ban coming from this ‘special offer’.

Why was it special?

So a lot of people fell for it. So what? There are many hoaxes where people fall for. What makes this one special?

First of all, it is who fell for it. As said, usually marketers kind of know what is a hoax and what isn’t. Why? Because the same methods are used to get their customers to do what they would like them to do. They should know better.

But more important here was that the marketers fell for the most powerful tactic used in Social Media, the one where the entire principle of Social Media is based on and the one where Google is focussing on: peer pressure.

The marketers shared the hoax, simply because they trusted the people who shared the hoax before them. A remark you saw a lot, after it was clear that it as a hoax, was “well I thought when person X shared it, it must be trustworthy“.

What happened here is a textbook example of how the human mind works and is used in marketing. You act on something because people you trust act on it.

There are two reasons why people do this: because its trust, but more importantly: because there is peer pressure.

source: http://peternews.com/avoid-peer-pressure-as-a-teen-christian/

What if you do not share and miss out and your friends do get that Ray-Ban? That would hurt because at that moment you are not part of the group, you fall out. It is something people might recognize from when they went to high school. We’ve all done things which we may have thought we didn’t want to do, but we felt the peer pressure of doing it. Not because people are telling you to do it, but because you feel that if you don’t you are not part of the group.

This given is something which is used a lot by marketers. Trying to get a group to do things by hinting on peer pressure: showing that others “do” it as well which will make you go for it as well.

This ‘pressure’ is all over Social Media and Facebook in specific. You are triggered to like pages which your friends have already liked because Facebook shows you the pictures of your friends in the widgets they give out.

Google is also trying to use this tactic. The “People in your social circle +1-ed this” feature in the SERPS is meant to do just that: put peer pressure on you to click on links, trust them. All based on what is in our human nature: we want to live up to the peer pressure.

And this ‘tactic’ is exactly what all the marketers fell for with the Ray-Ban hoax. I wonder if the marketers have learned something here…

The eyewear designer, Ray-Ban, has introduced an advertisement that features a gay couple holding hands as part of their 75th anniversary campaign.

The campaign, called ‘Never Hide,’ aims, according to the press release, to portray men and women “living their day to day lives with authenticity, with the courage to express themselves and their unique individuality, which is the most precious thing we have, because the most fashionable thing to be is yourself.”

The ad features two smart-suited men, holding hands, and walking on a busy sidewalk. It has proved very popular across the social networks and the blogosphere.

The photo was shot by the French advertising agency, Marcel, as an affirmation of “people from various eras who have flouted conventions in plain sight. Other photos in the campaign can be found here.

Dragon's Viceroy

We sat down with Dragon’s Product Line Manager Hillary Balch to find out more about what the brand has up its sleeve for next season’s collection, how they’ve have seen the eyewear market evolve, and where Dragon is headed.

What trends will we see in next season’s line?
We’ll definitely continue with strong color stories and themes which have been a big differentiator for us, one being the Palm Springs Pool collection which was literally inspired by a trip we all took to Palm Springs last year. You will also see a variation on our top selling style, The Jam, hitting this summer that we’re all very excited and jumping up and down about. And of course, we will continue to support our Performance Polar technology which was launched earlier this year. We’re keeping it simple by offering one polar consistently throughout the line, and it’s the best polar Dragon has ever offered – premium injected PC polar lens, ultra scratch-resistant, hydrophobic and oleophobic coatings on both sides, available in ionized finishes – all the good stuff.

What changes are you seeing at retail/on the business side?
Retail has dusted itself off and gotten back on its feet, which has been refreshing. 2011 was a great year for us and I think it’s getting better and better on the retail front. Even with the spotty snow season we’ve had, retailers seem to be receptive to our new products and sell-thru has been great – especially on our new frameless goggle. But don’t tell our goggle PLM that, I don’t want to give him a big head. Enough about snow – our core surf accounts are excited about our new products, and especially excited about our #1 selling frame, The Jam – it’s been going nuts across the board.

What were your greatest successes in 2011?
Not to beat a dead horse, but The Jam was definitely a big success for us. Even though it was released in 2010, it really got legs last year with the addition of the Owen Wright Signature color we released. Also, the double-digit growth we had in 2011 I’d say was a high point.

What are your projections for next season?
More double-digit growth, strong partnerships with our retailers, awesome designs, and a new ping pong table.

What additions are you making to the line? what won’t we see as much of?
Definitely more color across the board. Also, a big focus on our Dragon design language and what works for us as a brand. We’re cutting out a lot of the unnecessary clutter and “noise” and getting down to what matters to us in terms of the sunglass styles and sku’s – the end result being a clean, consistent, and kick ass offering.

Where are prices and margins heading for you?
Pricing is staying consistent with a competitive mixture of price points based on the lenses, polar vs. non polar, and premium colors and designs. Maintaining margin is a top priority, so we do what is necessary to maintain a strong healthy one – lots of fruits, veggies, and protein shakes.

What is the breakdown looking like for men’s and women’s SKU’s?
We continue to add a lot of female-friendly colors in frames like the Jam, Fame, Experience 2, and Viceroy to keep the ladies (me) looking fresh at all times. Most of our frames are unisex so we want to make sure we have some feminine influenced colors like leopard print – perhaps a selfish addition for myself – to add a feminine edge to the line. We have found that most styles and colors we introduce in the line work well for both men and women, so we will continue to focus on that rather than segmenting the line.

Are the number of SKU’s in your line expanding, contracting, or staying the same? Why?
We have put a big emphasis on sku-count optimization, meaning every sku in our line has to have a purpose and isn’t just clutter. We want to keep it simple for the retailers with a consistent message across the board and offer them a digestible line that they can get behind. With that said, it’s our number one goal to release fresh, high quality, relevant, money making products each season all while maintaining a tight offering and not blowing up sku count to a nightmarish level.

The sun has got his hat on (hip hip etc) and as such the stars have got their summer shades on, hooray!

Only just ‘any old pair’ won’t do for this fashionable bunch though, oh no, they’ve aligned themselves into sunglasses style tribes and just in time for spring/summer ’12. Clever that.

Want to steal their style?

Simply kick back, relax and pick a celebrity style tribe below (be it Rihanna’s Ray-Bans, Ashley ‘O' Olsen or Katy ‘Cats Eye’ Perry)...and then shop, shop like you have never shopped before.

More than just a pretty face, be a stylish face with these - Shady Lady Style Tribes:

* ASHLEY 'O-SHAPED' OLSEN *

Oh how Ashley 'O' Olsen loves a jumbo pair of shades, this time it's Prada...

Seeing Stars:
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Alexa Chung or Fearne Cotton.

The Style:
'O' shaped, the bigger the better think Willy Wonka frames times a bagillion.

Bonus points:
Tired, hungover, can't be bothered with make up? Saucer-sized shades are set to be your new BFF (Best Fashion Friend).

Seeing Stars:
KatyCat Perry, Kate Moss, Olivia Palermo.

The Style:
So called because they flick out like a cats eye at both edges (it's there in the name really) classic styles ooze vintage '50s glamour while crazy cats should opt for Dame Edna-esque frames.

Bonus points:
Feline fashionable? Whether you slip on a retro 1950s style or tap into the '70s tortoiseshell trend, Cats Eye shades will earn you serious catwalk style kudos.

Get the look: (tortoiseshell) Mango £18; Marks and Spencer £9.50 and Cheap Monday at ASOS.com £18

* GENERIC JEN'S
*

Seeing Stars:
Jennifer Aniston, Katie Holmes and Elle Macpherson.

The Style:
Whoever said generic was a bad thing (bar the dictionary that is) every stylish sort should own a pair of classic aviators, they're sexy in a understated way and are best worn with 'what this old t-shirt, and these old (sexy) jeans'

Bonus points:
You'll fit right in down your local airport slash Top Gun convention.

* RIHANNA'S RAY-BANS *

Seeing Stars:
Rihanna (and heaps of other people but Rihanna's good enough for us).

The Style:
If they say Ray-Ban on the lens, then you're right on the money when it comes to stylish shades - just a shame they cost a fair bit of the stuff too mind. Rihanna has dozens of styles but is favouring her 1950's wide-frame Wayfarers this spring.

Bonus points:
Ray-Bans are so God dang popular, the high street is brimming with 'Ray-Ban-inspired' styles (designer rip-offs to the rest of us). Treat your face to Topshop, Primark and ASOS.com from as little as £3 (mwa ha ha ha - sorry Rihanna - haaa).

* POSH POSH *

Seeing Stars:
Victoria Beckham, JLo and Anna Wintour

The Style:
For shades that scream 'I've got a money pool at home and could, if asked, wallpaper my house in £50s' look to Victoria Beckham and her Dior/dVB/Marc Jacobs/Jimmy Choo (delete as required) styles. Usually oversized, glam' and *coughostentiouscough* if it's got a designer's name written down the side of it in diamonds then it's Posh Posh enough for, err, Posh.

Bonus points:
What's that? You're not Victoria Beckham or JLo? Pish posh! Just by a jumbo sized pair on the high street, grab a silver pen and some glitter et voila, bespoke designer shades!

Seeing Stars:
Nicole Richie

The Style:
Step into the sunlight vintage princess Nicole Richie! Richie by name (and sunglasses collection) Nicole boasts an impressive array of styles, all of them undeniably chic in a retro, 'I've been hoarding these bad boys for years' kind of way.

Bonus points:
If you're in any further doubt as to who should be your summer shades style icon, you cannot go wrong with Nicole's mantra ' if they look retro, they look cool'.

Until about a month ago, the sunglasses shop Vanity by the Sea was located in the old Mercantile building in Capitola Village. But in February, it not only moved to the main stretch of storefronts on Capitola Avenue, it also became the only designer sunglasses vendor in the Village, as the Sunglass Hut has shut down.

"Business has been good," said Justyna Zimkowski, who owns the store with her husband, Bo. "We're getting many more locals in than we used to get, which is really nice to see."

The Zimkowskis said they moved from the Mercantile building, where they had been for two years, "mainly for the location," and they are excited to be in the new, more exposed space.

The couple painted the walls a vibrant yellow, which glows from the sunlight coming through the windows, and from the brightly-lit display cases which Bo installed along both walls and in the window.

Zimkowski is particularly proud of the new Ray-Ban summer collection in the store.

"When somebody buys a pair we want to make sure they are happy. We make sure the sunglasses fit their face, and if not we can make the adjustments," said Zimkowski, who said they began selling just Ray-Bans, and are now the number one retailer in California for their selection and volume.

Although the price reads $148, they are selling for 10 percent off, along with the entire selection of Ray-Bans. You can't find Ray-Bans at this price anywhere locally, and orders made remotely get free shipping.

On top of size adjustment, customers can take their expensive glasses to get repaired at Vanity by the Sea, should they break or need a new part. Bo Zimkowski is also working on his certification to fit people with prescription glasses.

In one corner, Justyna has set up a Bellá Pierre cosmetics station, stocked with the high-end mineral powders, brushes and eyeshadows. She helps customers find the right colors for them, and also does makeup for customers's events.

"We love working with people. The best part is when customers come in and then they come back with their friends or family," she said.

Vanity by the Sea also carries sunglasses by Oakley, Coach, Maui Gem, Revo and Arnette.

Bo and Justyna moved from Poland about six years ago, and went into the sunglasses business after learning about it from a successful friend who was doing the same. The new storefront has added an optimistic tone to their future plans.

"It's been hard from the beginning," she said. "We want to settle down here, and now I think we'll stay longer. I think this is the place."

Vanity By the Sea is at 215 Capitola Avenue, and is open seven days a week.
